My nearly-thirteen-year-old does not have the best attitude to doing homework. It is about doing as little as he can possibly get away with, so that he can have more time to do the things he loves. Coupled with his tendency to leave the things he doesn’t love to do (like homework) to the last minute, it creates ample opportunities for volatile discussions, late at night. School nights, I might add.
After hours of working his way through a week’s worth of Maths revision, he still had to create some flash cards for a Literacy exam on a famous poem. He had everything he needed to make some super, awesome flashcards that could help him ace this exam. The teacher even told him the categories to research and with the wonderful world wide web at his finger tips, what more could he ask for?
In frustration, I watched as he roughly scribbled a few lines on each flashcard. Just a few lines from what he could remember in his head. Not even bothering to put a little bit of skin in the game. He hardly looked at his notes. He didn’t even open his laptop. A perfect parenting opportunity here, I thought. I would show him how it’s done. Ha!
I looked at all the categories that the teacher suggested: The title, the poet, the context, the meaning, the key quotes. I showed my son how to take each flashcard, and write down what he can remember. Then do a bit of research on it, and write some bullet points for each category. If he did that, he would absolutely ace his exam. I wish I could tell you that he was just as enthusiastic about my lesson, than I was. But he just collected his scribbles and shoved them in his school bag. I don’t think he is particularly worried about the exam. Even though I know he should be!
As I picked myself up from the ashes of defeat, my perfect parenting opportunity took a surprising turn. God must have seen a perfect parenting opportunity too. Ha!
Suddenly, I felt the Holy Spirit speak straight to my heart. “You know you can ace any exam too, right?” I heard him whisper. I started thinking about each category that the teacher set out for my son’s revision task:
Did you know that you are a living, breathing, walking-around poem? The title of the poem is you! And me!
“We have become his poetry, a re-created people that will fulfill the destiny he has given each of us, for we are joined to Jesus, the Anointed One. Even before we were born, God planned in advance our destiny and the good works we would do to fulfill it!”
Ephesians 2:10 TPT
You are the masterpiece that are being written day by day. Every day, line upon line, the Poet is working on you, until you are perfect in every way. And he is very skilful, he knows what he is doing. He has plenty of experience, with countless works of poetry that can attest to his brilliance.
What do I know about the Poet? Well, I know him personally. And every single day, I learn more about him. But this is what I can tell you about him.
He is good. (James 1:17)
His intentions towards you are good. (Jeremiah 29:11)
There is no other poet who can compare to him. (Psalm 40:5)
He is loving, gentle and kind. (Psalm 86:5)
He is powerful, mighty and will defend you cause to the point of death. (Romans 8:38-39)
The context of the poem, is Grace. Through the gift of righteousness you have been set free from the law of sin and death. You can now live and breathe and have your being in the Spirit. Ruled by the law of Life in Christ Jesus. There is no condemnation towards you. Only an invitation to life more abundantly.
“For it was only through this wonderful grace that we believed in him. Nothing we did could ever earn this salvation, for it was the gracious gift from God that brought us to Christ! So no one will ever be able to boast, for salvation is never a reward for good works or human striving.”
Ephesians 2:8-9 TPT
Everything you will need to fulfil your purpose and destiny has been made available by this Grace. And you have been given the gift of Faith, with which you can access it.
The Poet has written you into existence for a purpose. He knew the exact design; how he was going to create you and where he would place you. He has perfect plans to complete the work he has started in you. You were written into eternity because you carry a significant part of his plan.
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you,
and before you were born I consecrated you;
I appointed you a prophet to the nations.”
Every human being on this planet has been designed with a designated purpose. As we get to know the Poet, we will discover the meaning behind his creation. As we hear his spoken Word over our hearts, we discover the specific meaning of our own existence.
The Key Quotes
What are the Words of Life that are burning in your heart? You are a living, breathing poem, spoken into existence by the greatest Poet that has ever been and ever will be. Do you know the key quotes written over your heart?
You will need them, when the exam comes.
Jesus wrote his exam when he went into the wilderness after his baptism. The cunning enemy’s strategy, was to get him to bend the knee to a different poet. A poet who is the author of chaos and destruction. But Jesus was not tempted to prove his worth to an inferior poet, because he knew what the True Poet has written. And with every “it is written,” he overcame the temptation to conform to a lesser plan and miss the incredible destiny designed and ordained for him, before the creation of time.
Do you know the key quotes that are written over your heart? Can you respond with “it is written” when the poet of chaos knocks on the door? Do you know who the True Poet says you are? His Beloved.
Exams are never enjoyable, but they are a part of life. There will be days when we have to write the test. But we don’t have to worry or be fearful when we have done our homework. When we have our flashcards at the ready!
“My fellow believers, when it seems as though you are facing nothing but difficulties see it as an invaluable opportunity to experience the greatest joy that you can! For you know that when your faith is tested it stirs up power within you to endure all things. And then as your endurance grows even stronger it will release perfection into every part of your being until there is nothing missing and nothing lacking.”
James 1:2-4 TPT

Today, I hear the Poet saying: “Brilliant Child! You are my poetry in motion. Every Word that I have spoken over your life carries purpose and destiny. My Words over you will not return void. Every Word will activate my plan for you and bring it into perfect completion. I carefully watch over the Words sown into your heart. I watch. I prune. I care. I bring it into bloom. For you are a reflection of Me. You are the living expression of my heart. My Poem.” ❤
