Guard your heart

One of the lanterns on my path to freedom, was a book written by John Eldrege titled, “Waking the Dead.” In this book, he shares his own experience of living unaware of the wicked schemes of the enemy. An enemy that is after our hearts. He writes:

“The story of your life is the story of the long and brutal assault on your heart by the one who knows what you could be and fears it.”
John Eldredge, Waking the Dead: The Glory of a Heart Fully Alive

You see, it is the heart that determines our course in life. That is why it is targeted by the enemy. Whoever has the heart, controls the person. You speak what is in your heart. You create a reality as you speak. Just like the One who created you in his image. The heart is what the thief is after. That is why we are told:

“So above all, guard the affections of your heart,*
for they affect all that you are.
Pay attention to the welfare of your innermost being,
for from there flows the wellspring of life.
Proverbs 4:23 TPT

Once upon a time, is not just a phrase that sets the scene for a fairy tale. It is also the title of a series on Netflix. One that really intrigued me from the first episode. Why? Because it is such a wonderful analogy to what happened to us when we were brought under the curse.

The little town of Storybrook are full of fairy tale characters that have forgotten who they really are. In an attempt to overthrow the kingdom and rule them all, the Evil Queen put everyone under a spell. Snow White, is now a teacher named Mary Margaret. When we meet Prince Charming, he is unidentified. He is in hospital, waking from a coma, unable to recall who he is or where he is from.

Since they were each other’s destined true loves, Snow White and Prince Charming were drawn to each other. In their “real” world, they were married. But in this one Prince Charming had another wife.

Their daughter, Emma Swan, did not grow up in Storybrook. But her son did. Her son knew that she was the only one who could break the spell. The first series follows his journey as he tries to convince his mum that she is the saviour. Spoiler alert: it is Emma’s love for her son, and her kiss on his forehead as he is dying in hospital, that breaks the curse; and suddenly everyone remembers who they are.

One of the (slightly disturbing) tricks up the Evil Queen’s sleeve is digging her hand into her rival’s chest to grab hold of their heart. Once she has the heart, she can control that person and make them do all sorts of despicable things. Things that they normally don’t want to do, but they have lost control. They have lost their power to choose their actions.

This may be a slightly unnerving picture, but to me there were some significant parallels here that is actually quite synonymous with our experience in life.

What are you guarding your heart from?

I have often interpreted Proverbs 4:23 as official permission to avoid people who I know will affect me in a negative way. But I don’t believe that anymore. We are not guarding our hearts from people. Our warfare is not against flesh and blood.

According to the Passion translation, *The Hebrew word levav is the most common word for “heart.” It includes our thoughts, our will, our discernment, and our affections.

Thoughts.
How often to we pay attending to what we’re thinking about?

The Will.
Do we understand the impact from the choices we are making, on our hearts?

Discernment.
Do we have such a good handle on the Truth, that we can discern when we are being presented with a lie? Or a half-truth?

Affections.
What have we set our hearts on? What does our priorities look like? What is our life centred around?

Doing a regular spiritual heart-check is a really great habit to build into your life. It will change your whole world. The one who controls the heart, controls the person. Don’t give the enemy access to it.

A few years back, I was watching and interview with Jennifer LeClaire, on Sid Roth’s “It’s Supernatural” show. She made a statement that has left such a strong impression on me. She said: “The battle might be fought in the mind, but the battle is for your heart.”

The world you are experiencing right now, is not just a random collection of circumstances and experiences. It is also a product of your heart. Your mind filters through an enormous amount of information that it receives from your five senses. That information is stored up in your heart. The heart is where faith is generated. Faith that aligns with the Truth, or faith that aligns with the lies of the enemy.

Jesus said that what comes out of the mouth, will reveal what is in the heart (Matthew 15:18-20). Our words are not only a reflection of what is stored up in our hearts, but it will also have a creative impact on the world around us (Mark 11:23-24). We are after all, created in the image of the Creator.

“A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.”
Luke 6:45 NIV

Today, may we have the courage to look into the treasury of our hearts to see what has been stored up in there. Maybe it’s time to throw out some limiting beliefs. Maybe it’s time kick out the doubt, fear and worry. Make some room for Hope. For words of Truth and Life.

Don’t stay under a curse that will try and convince you that you are just a person living in a random set of circumstances. There is so much more to you. There is a different story happening behind the scenes. One where you are of the highest nobility; divine origin. One where you have a purpose and destiny to fulfil.

Maybe it’s time for a fresh awakening to who you really are and the calling upon your life. One that can only be brought about by true love’s kiss. So, I pray that you will take the leap and kiss the Son. May it quicken your spirit and remind you that you are part of a bigger story. You are the righteousness of God, in Christ. You are free.

And you are loved.

Today, I hear the Father whisper: “Brilliant Child! How I long to share with you the secrets of my heart, the wonderful plans I have for you and the incredible treasure you carry. You are one of a kind. You are from the lineage of Heaven. Unique. Intrinsically designed for destiny. Fill your heart with Heaven and the Earth will have no hold on you. My love alone, will reveal who you truly are and empower you to believe it. You are my Beloved.” ❤
