“Birthday parties aren’t fun for adults,” my daughter said to me as we set off to fetch her friends from school this afternoon. We were on our way to an icerink, birthday cake and party favours in the boot.
“You have so much to do! There’s the invitations, and the presents, and the party, and…” as she continued, I realised that my “crazy” must have been showing and it was time to tuck it back in.
“Zoë,” I said, “I don’t mind doing any of those jobs, as long as you have a really good time today. You don’t have to worry about how hard everyone is working, because we love you and we want to celebrate you. I’m sorry for getting a little stressed out. I know I stress too much sometimes.”
“Yes Mum, you do,” she said, with a cheeky little grin and a twinkle in her eye.
In the rush to pick up the little party people, I faintly heard the Father saying: “…and I love you, and I celebrate you…”
“The LORD your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.” Zephaniah 3:17, NIV
Parents work hard on birthdays, that’s true. But we don’t just love and celebrate our children once a year. There isn’t one day that goes by, that I don’t look at my children and see the best two things that ever happened to me (out of three, my awesome husband being the first)!
Why is it so easy to doubt that God feels the same way about us? There are times when I don’t feel like I deserve the fuss. Or that I haven’t been good enough for the Father to even look my way. But he does. Because he loves me, and celebrates me, ever day.
Have you ever seen the face of a proud father? In all the business of life, I often forget to look for his smile over me. To see my Father beam with pride and joy, not because I am some kind of child-wonder. But simply because I’m his. Quirks and all. If I can just get still enough for a moment, I can hear him sing: “happy birthday to you!”
Today, I declare that I am celebrated, because I belong to my Father. He is proud of me and I am his delight.
May you find his eyes today, and see him beam with pride and joy.
Today, I hear the Father singing songs of love over me: “Precious Child, how I adore you! I love to see you smile. To see your heart filled with joy. True joy, that comes from a heart that knows it is celebrated. I celebrate you today. I celebrate you every day. You are my joy and my delight. I am so proud of you. And you are deeply, loved.” ❤
